Empowering Nepal’s Visually Impaired Since 1985

Nepal Association for the Welfare of the Blind (NAWB) provides comprehensive support to over 200,000 individuals with visual impairments across Nepal. From Braille education to vocational training, we’re committed to fostering independence and dignity in our communities.

Our Impact in Numbers

At NAWB, every number represents a life touched, a barrier overcome, and a step towards an inclusive Nepal. For nearly four decades, we’ve been working tirelessly to empower individuals with visual impairments. These figures reflect our commitment, but behind each statistic are countless personal stories of work, growth, and achievement.

NAWB’s Core Initiatives

The following six programs form the backbone of NAWB’s work across Nepal. Each addresses a specific need of visually impaired individuals, from education and employment to health and social inclusion. Developed over nearly four decades, these initiatives reach from urban centers to remote villages, adapting to local contexts while maintaining our standards of quality and impact.

Community-Based Rehabilitation (CBR)

We’ve implemented CBR programs in 14 districts of Nepal. Our workers provide home-based services including mobility training, daily living skills, and access to local resources for visually impaired individuals.

Inclusive Education

We support visually impaired students from primary to university level. Our work includes teacher training, providing Braille textbooks, and adapting curricula to ensure inclusive classrooms across Nepal.

Vocational Training

We offer various skills programs suited to both urban and rural settings. These range from traditional crafts to modern technologies, aimed at promoting financial independence among visually impaired individuals.

Brialle Production

Our Braille press in Kathmandu produces over 1,000 pages daily. We create textbooks, leisure reading materials, and other resources to promote Braille literacy among visually impaired Nepalis.

Low Vision Services

Our resource center provides support for individuals with partial sight. Services include functional vision assessments, provision of adaptive devices, and training to maximize use of remaining vision in daily life.

Advocacy and Rights

We advocate for the rights of visually impaired individuals in Nepal. This involves working on inclusive policies at the national level and raising awareness in local communities to promote an equitable society.
